The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
