The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
