Much like bad weather hit the northwest the prior day, Manchester City swept Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a emphatic three goal win for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their position at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This outcome signalled successive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' ability to balance domestic and European soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they secured entry to the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the memorable win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in contrast, have no such fitness concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the term.

They added to their cushion with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was allowed to drive through the midfield from the back, the pitch became spacious for City. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a precise ground pass for Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from outside the box.

Final Period

The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- City player Park came nearest, striking the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to record a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any side who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after nine games.
