Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
