Multiple Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Hits Delta Aircraft into Sydney

A number of individuals have been injured when a Delta Airlines jet originating in LA to Sydney experienced turbulence this past Friday.

Flight DL41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson stated. Several cabin crew members required medical attention.

Emergency medical services stated they evaluated a total of five people, and transported three to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries that such as pain in the back and head pain. The injured ranged from their 30s to 70s.

This marks the newest example of planes being hit by turbulence, with researchers indicating that global warming is a major factor.

There were nearly 250 travelers and 15 crew members on the Airbus A350, the official said, clarifying that the plane landed "safely and normally" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service indicated they received a call just a mere three minutes prior to the plane landed, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.

The reasons turbulence is getting increasingly prevalent - and potentially more dangerous.

In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "significant" atmospheric disturbance just two hours into the long-haul flight, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

Earlier this year, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a harrowing short but intense period of extreme instability. An individual died and dozens were injured, as those without seatbelts lifted out of their seats and fell back down.

In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence on aircraft journeys, and while cases of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are remained quite uncommon.

Data suggests that there are an estimated thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a overall number of over 35 million flights that currently occur around the world.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a plane going through unstable air apply greater than a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.

As climate change modifies weather patterns, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become bumpier: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the upper atmosphere are likely to boost the frequency and intensity of significant turbulence.
