Victims of Catholic Religious Sex Abuse Express Hope After Meeting with Pope Leo

Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism following their initial meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the role in spring, has inherited this longstanding problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The Canadian activist revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was later moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they commented. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to canon law will enable the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed engaged in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recently released church-ordered document emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they informed the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they expressed hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a relationship and continuing to build that bond is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
